Some total lunatics that apparently run some area of Germany think that if they retroactively removed Hitler's citizenship, then all of history will be different. Maybe this is the stupid mindset that has Democrats today "apologizing" for things they never did, like offering reparations for slavery.
And they really do think this:
The city “keeps getting labelled as the place that helped Hitler get his German citizenship”, said Isolde Saalmann, a local MP
Yet, these socialst Democrats actually believe that if they retroactively recind Hitler's citizenship, then their town won't be known as the one who gave him citizenship. Is this Orwell's 1984, or what? Just because they want something to NOT have happened 75 years ago, they can simply pass a law and it will actually not have happened? What's even scarier is I bet they can get the textbooks rewritten to show that Hitler never was a citizen. I can see historians in 25 years trying to figure out how Hitler even got elected -- since he wasn't even a citizen!
Then again, in 25 years, no one may know who Hitler was since some countries are already denying his existence.
I worked with a nurse who was raised in Germany. In her education over there in the 1960's they never even mentioned Hitler's name as German. The Holocaust didn't happen. Hitler was a real person, just not the bad person he really was. I guess they have changed all this now...and they do teach history as it happened. BUT it sounds like this town lives in the reality based community. They should not feel shame here- fact is fact and history can be learned from. Good can come from it as long the right lesson is learned.
You don't have to rewrite history to silence it. Silencing is much easier and seems quite popular.
Have you ever seen, "Das Schreckliche Maedchen" (English, "Nasty Girl."
Great movie which really hits on an important theme, if you can handle subtitles. I'm lucky...I can just listen to the German and ignore the English. ; )
But you really should watch it. She isn't "nasty" for what we Amis would think someone nasty. She's "nasty" for digging up the past of her community.
Raven, I'm not sure they teach history there. This town wants to change it just in case someone else finds out about it. It's amazing that they can just think that by changing something now, it will somehow affect what happened in the past.
Dana, never heard of it. I'd have to read the subtitles. I may have to try and find that one, thanks for the tip.
