Site Meter Ogre's Politics & Views: Break in Democrat Unity

Now things are really looking bad for Jim Black, Speaker of the North Carolina House. More Democrats are now running away from him with the news that the North Carolina Attorney General will not approve the state paying for $200,000 of Black's legal fees.

The decision can only be overriden by the governor. That will be the signal to determine whether all North Carolina Democrats have left Jim Black.

Black has created all these legal bills by having to respond to various subpeanas by state and federal government that is investigating his campaign lawbreaking and other questionable dealings. Black asked the state to pay his legal bills, and the state, run completely by Democrats, has now officially declined, leaving Black to pay his own bills.

If the governor intervenes and gives Black the money, that will show that the Democrats are staying united and still supporting Black. However, if the governor does not intervene, that will be a signal to all the rest of the North Carolina Democrats that Governor Easley is cutting Black loose.

I don't think even Easley is going to try and help Black at this point, knowing it's an election year for the General Assembly, and the people are already starting to smell the stink from the Democrats running the place in Asheville.
