It's pretty much official for the year -- the Lottery has failed to pass in North Carolina, at least until next May. The Charlotte Observer continues to whine incessantly that people of North Carolina will not be able to give more of their money to the state to spend.
There are various reasons to oppose the lottery, and I'm pretty much in agreement with most of them. It IS a harmful situation. It is bad for society. It's also NOT a function of government -- it is simply something the government should not be doing. Finally, if gambling is such a good idea, why should the state be the only one allowed to do it? If it's going to be legal, why can't individuals run a system, too?
But the socialists at the Charlotte Observer complain and complain because anything that puts more money in the hands of Those Who Know Better (Democrat Legislators) makes the Observer happy. They don't care how more money gets taken from those who work, they just want more. The current article actually bemoans the fact that people who live in NC have to use gas money to gamble in South Carolina!
Hey idiots, if you don't want to spend the gas money, stay at home and don't gamble!
Just tell them to buy their tickets in Florida.

Someone should explain to the Observer that the lottery money will be used as a shell game along with the money allocated to education, rather then as supplemental money for education. They need to "think of the children." An hour of research on their part on the internet could lead them to the shenanigans that other states pull.
Actually, William, I think they are well aware of how it works. I don't think they're dumb, I think they just want more money for the state.
Anyone who claims that the lottery will help education, by now, knows that they are lying -- they just want a damn lottery, lies be damned.
I wouldn't mind a lottery so much if they were honest about where the money goes, like in Colorado. Most states are full of shat when it comes to where the money goes. When they say "education," I think grade school, maybe even high school. But the money seems to go more to vo tech and college grants.
Yes, they are total liars. In NC, the lottery will increase state spending in social welfare and business welfare only. They will do exactly as Florida and GA have done -- replace current spending with lottery funds (even when they claim they won't).
And from a basic freedom perspective, I just cannot understand why the state can be permitted to operate an institution of gambling, but individuals cannot. That's just wrong.
